King Macbeth of Scotland begins to rule. His life would become the subject for Shakespeare's later Macbeth.

The Chinese develop a method of copying called "movable type" for the production of mass printing by use of clay foundation.


This work would later be expanded upon by use of metal in Korea (1234) and eventually the printing press by Johann Gutenberg (1447) would become the staple of printing technology.

The Great Schism begins as the church splits over the matter of the filioque in the Nicene Creed (589 AD).

The Byzantine Empire is defeated at the Battle of Menzikert by a Turkish army.

The Crusades begin under the authority of William the Conqueror.

The First Crusade officially begins when the Byzantine Emperor calls on Christians to help defend him against the Turks.
