Petrarch is born in Italy. Along with Dante, he would come to be known as one of the "Fathers of the Renaissance."

The Great Famine spreads across Europe and kills millions. This period is marked by tremendous levels of criminal activity, disease, poor weather, and cannibalism for survival.

John Wycliffe is born in Yorkshire, England.

Dante's Divine Comedy is completed as a famed masterpiece of literature.

Petrarch coins the term "Dark Ages" as a reference to the period of the preceding 900 years and the abscence of a major empire in control.

The Black Plague sweeps through Europe killing more than a third of the population. Most victims would die within four to seven days of receiving the virus.

The Western Schism of the church begins.

The Wycliffe Bible first appeared as a means to get the "Bible to the people."


Though famed for being the first to translate the Word of God into Middle English and thus sparking a much later Wycliffe Foundation for translation of Biblical text, Wycliffe's original work was built from the Latin Vulgate moreso than the original languages.
