1700 - 1800

TEXT HISTORY
WORLD HISTORY

1721

Robert Walpole becomes the first prime minister of Great Britain.

1734

Johann Albrecht Bengel publishes his edition of the Greek New Testament.

This particular edition of publication led to an enhancement of Robert Estienne's earlier fourth edition in which verses were introduced. Here Bengel introduces a text with paragraph structure.

1738-1790

The Methodist Church begins to expand under the leadership of John Wesley and Charles Wesley.

1758

Noah Webster is born in Hartford, Connecticut.

1764

The Quaker Bible is published under the direction of Anthony Purver.

The actual title of the Quaker Bible was "A new and literal translation of all the books of the Old and New Testament; with notes critical and explanatory." Very little is documented today about which Greek and Hebrew texts would have been used in this edition, but being prior to Westcott, Hort, and others, one can consider the possibility that Purver used the Textus Receptus. On the other hand, it can be debated that regardless of his use of Greek or Hebrew, he was not deemed as an "authorized" translator.

1773

The Boston-Tea Party takes place as a revolt against taxation without representation.

1775-1783

The American Revolutionary War begins as a prequel to the Declaration of Indepedence (1776).

1776

The Declaration of Independence is signed under the pen of Thomas Jefferson.

1786

The Codex Alexandrinus is first published in Woide's lesser known Greek New Testament.

1789

George Washington is elected as the first president of the United States.

1789-1799

The French Revolution begins.

1790

Noah Webster's fight to achieve copyright laws is passed by the federal government.

1792

The New York Stock Exchange Board (NYSE) is established.

1793

Karl Lachmann is born in Germany.

Beginning in 1831, Lachmann would become the first to part ways with the Byzantine Text and generally accepted Textus Receptus. As a philologist (professor of language), he believed that it was important to restore the most ancient readings available in correlation with what was known from the majority text. The Institute for New Testament Textual Research has noted that the difference between the Byzantine Text and Lachmann's Alexandrian text are 85% identical. What remains arguable and worthy to debate is whether a 15% difference (even in slight notations) ought to be considered the preserved text.

1794

Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin.

1799

Napoleon becomes the dictator of France.
