962 AD

Traditional acceptance for the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire under Otto I the Great.

Upon heightened political turmoil in Italy, Pope John XII crowned Otto emperor and thus joined the church and the state in political affiliation and authority. It would be this very thing that caused future protestant explorers, Americans, and other such leaders to institute constitutions aimed at seperating "church and state" from accepted policy. Today's interpretation of such amendments is a source of great debate within the context of knowing what is credited for being acceptable and what is not.

970 AD

A decade-long famine begins in France.

973 AD

The death of Otto I the Great. In passing the throne to his son, Otto II not only becomes the second Holy Roman Emperor, but he also becomes the King of Germany. This additional title would introduce a connection of leadership to the future Ottoman Empire.

983 AD

The death of Otto II. His son, Otto III becomes King of Germany and exerts much more authority in that role than his father before him.
